Crew Calling: The Iridium scratch and phone
service
The Iridium scratch and phone service enables crewmembers
to call via the Iridium network in times
when the on board Iridium terminals are not being used.
Crew calling solution:
Crew calling solutions have been very successful with other
satellite networks. The solutions are simple to use
and enable crews around the world to communicate with their loved
ones at home. This new system offers
the crew and ship-owners a simple and cost-effective solution
with one low airtime rate to nearly anywhere
in the world.
How does it work?
The new Iridium Scratch & Phone service utilises the existing
Iridium terminals with a normal post-paid
subscription. France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications will
enable the post-paid subscription
terminals to also become Scratch & Phone enabled. The Scratch
and Phone cards have a unique PIN number
which identifies the Scratch & Phone card and enables the
system to keep an account on credit amounts per
card. This has major advantages:
· No new hardware has to be bought or installed if an Iridium
phone has been installed previously. (you
only need a new SIM card with Scratch & Phone enabled)
· Crew can still utilise the post-paid subscription for
business calls.
· Post-paid and Scratch & Phone calls are automatically
separated therefore NO invoices, NO administrative hassles.
· The system is simple and easy to use.
· One tariff to anywhere using the Scratch & Phone
service(excepting other satellite systems which this
system can not reach)
· Caller is updated on credit status every time a call
is initiated.

The Calling process:
Once a user has enabled to use the Scratch & Phone service
the calling process is as follows:
Captain and assigned crew using the post-paid service:
Just dial:
[698] + [International phone number] + #
Voice prompt asks for (optional) PIN, enter PIN number. Wait while
call is connected.
Crew calling via Scratch & Phone: Just dial:
[2888] + [International phone number] + #
Voice prompt asks for Scratch & Phone PIN, enter PIN number.
Announcement of credit left. Wait while call is connected.
Note: When using a 9505 change # with the OK button to
start making the call.
Not only for the Maritime Market:
Due the flexible nature of the new Scratch & Phone service
many other market segments can make use of
its services. The system works with all Iridium phones. Other
segment examples are Oil & Gas, Remote office
applications, Tourism etc.
Features of Scratch & Phone card:
· 20 minute denominations only.
· Works with unique PIN number.
· Expire date 12 months after initial call.
· Not rechargeable.
· No satellite calls available except Iridium to Iridium*.
· The Scratch & Phone service is only available to
terminals on a post-paid subscription.
· NO Data available in Scratch & Phone mode.
*Note: Iridium to Iridium airtime price via Scratch & Phone
is the same as Iridium to landline.
